In fact, he&#8217;s provided <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fangraphs.com\/statss.aspx?playerid=639&amp;position=3B#value\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-id=\"82\" data-m=\"{&quot;i&quot;:82,&quot;p&quot;:47,&quot;n&quot;:&quot;partnerLink&quot;,&quot;y&quot;:24,&quot;o&quot;:14}\">surplus value<\/a> on every single season of his two veteran contracts &#8211; a five-year, $96-million deal and a two-year, $36-million deal. That feat in itself seems almost unbelievable in the modern era.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Beltre&#8217;s age-31 and beyond average WAR is just shy of 6.0 &#8211; a total Brooks Robinson only eclipsed once in his career, at the age of 27, and a mark which George Brett only beat twice, once at 27 and once at 32.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Granted, he hasn&#8217;t endured any declining phase at all &#8211; and that may come as he gets even nearer to or beyond 40. It&#8217;s worth noting, though, that Chipper Jones gracefully retired without venturing into the dubious late-career negative-WAR phase.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>There are plenty of players who begin their careers on what appears to be a Hall of Fame pace. At the time, he was the youngest player in the <a title=\"National League\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_League\">National League<\/a> (NL).\u00a0<sup id=\"cite_ref-baseball-reference1_3-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> During his first <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"At-bat\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/At-bat\">at-bat<\/a>, Beltr\u00e9 hit a two-out <a title=\"Run batted in\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Run_batted_in\">run batted in<\/a> (RBI) <a title=\"Double (baseball)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Double_(baseball)\">double<\/a> off Angels <a title=\"Starting pitcher\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Starting_pitcher\">starter<\/a> <a title=\"Chuck Finley\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chuck_Finley\">Chuck Finley<\/a> into <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Left field\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Left_field\">left field<\/a> to score <a title=\"Paul Konerko\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paul_Konerko\">Paul Konerko<\/a> from <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Second base\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Second_base\">second base<\/a> to tie the game. Beltr\u00e9 hit his first <a title=\"Home run\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Home_run\">home run<\/a> six days later against <a title=\"1998 Texas Rangers season\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1998_Texas_Rangers_season\">Texas Rangers<\/a> starter <a title=\"Rick Helling\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rick_Helling\">Rick Helling<\/a>. At the end of the 1998 season, Beltr\u00e9 finished with 13 <a title=\"Error (baseball)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Error_(baseball)\">errors<\/a> at third base while<a title=\"Batting average\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Batting_average\">batting<\/a> .215 with seven home runs.<\/strong><strong>At one point in the <a title=\"Spring training\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spring_training\">spring training<\/a> prior to the start of the <a title=\"1999 Los Angeles Dodgers season\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1999_Los_Angeles_Dodgers_season\">1999<\/a> season, Beltr\u00e9&#8217;s agent, <a title=\"Scott Boras\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Scott_Boras\">Scott Boras<\/a>, commented to him that &#8220;he couldn&#8217;t believe&#8221; his relatively rapid ascent to the majors and handling of &#8220;such a difficult position like third base&#8221; at age 20. Beltr\u00e9 replied that he was 19 years old, not 20. Boras then realized that his date of birth in the Dodgers&#8217; records was incorrect and indicated the same to the team, but, that if they were to correct the mistake by compensating Beltr\u00e9 for signing him at younger than MLB&#8217;s allowable age, they would no longer pursue the issue. Team personnel at Las Palmas denied Boras&#8217; assertion.\u00a0<sup id=\"cite_ref-arangure073114_4-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> As a result, Boras and Beltr\u00e9 went public. Boras convinced <a title=\"Commissioner of Baseball\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Commissioner_of_Baseball\">Commissioner of Baseball<\/a> <a title=\"Bud Selig\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bud_Selig\">Bud Selig<\/a> to investigate the Dodgers, and Major League Baseball suspended their scouting operations in the Dominican Republic for one year,\u00a0<sup id=\"cite_ref-perry2005_2-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> as well as Avila and Peguero. Dodgers <a title=\"List of Los Angeles Dodgers owners and executives\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_Los_Angeles_Dodgers_owners_and_executives\">general manager<\/a> <a title=\"Fred Claire\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fred_Claire\">Fred Claire<\/a>, whom MLB did not contact during their investigation, publicly expressed surprise and that he was unaware of the incident.\u00a0<sup id=\"cite_ref-arangure073114_4-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> Selig awarded Beltr\u00e9 $48,500 in damages.<sup id=\"cite_ref-5\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Beltr\u00e9 averaged .265 and 18 home runs per season from 1999 through <a title=\"2003 Los Angeles Dodgers season\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2003_Los_Angeles_Dodgers_season\">2003<\/a>. After hitting his first home run in April, and his second later that month, Beltr\u00e9&#8217;s hitting began to improve.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>On July 23, 2006, against the <a title=\"2006 Boston Red Sox season\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2006_Boston_Red_Sox_season\">Boston Red Sox<\/a>, Beltr\u00e9 hit an <a title=\"Inside-the-park home run\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Inside-the-park_home_run\">inside-the-park home run<\/a>, the first one ever in <a title=\"Safeco Field\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Safeco_Field\">Safeco Field<\/a> history.<sup id=\"cite_ref-9\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Though it was not a great season for Beltr\u00e9, it was statistically his best as a Mariner. He hit .276, had 26 home runs, 99 RBI, and a career high 41 doubles. On September 11, Beltr\u00e9 hit two home runs, including the 300th of his career, against the <a title=\"2011 Oakland Athletics season\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2011_Oakland_Athletics_season\">Oakland Athletics<\/a>. He joined teammates <a title=\"Josh Hamilton\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Josh_Hamilton\">Josh Hamilton<\/a> and <a title=\"Mike Napoli\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mike_Napoli\">Mike Napoli<\/a> on the All-Star team. It was Beltr\u00e9&#8217;s third All-Star Game and third in a row dating back to 2010 with the Boston Red Sox.<sup id=\"cite_ref-35\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-sn070112_36-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In the August 22, 2012, game against the <a title=\"2012 Baltimore Orioles season\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2012_Baltimore_Orioles_season\">Baltimore Orioles<\/a>, Beltr\u00e9 hit three home runs in his first three at-bats, including two in the same inning. He joined Pablo Sandoval, Albert Pujols, George Brett, Reggie Jackson and Babe Ruth as the only players to hit a three-homer game in both the regular season and the postseason.\u00a0On August 24, he hit for the cycle for the second time in his career. Both of his cycles came at <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Rangers Ballpark in Arlington\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rangers_Ballpark_in_Arlington\">Rangers Ballpark<\/a>. With his first coming as a member of the Mariners, it was the first time in MLB history that a player had hit for the cycle more than once at the same stadium.<span style=\"font-size: 13.3333px; line-height: 20px;\">\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0He joined Joe DiMaggio as the only two players in big league history to have a three-homer game and a cycle in the same week. For his efforts, Beltr\u00e9 was named the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"AL Player of the Week\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/AL_Player_of_the_Week\">AL Player of the Week<\/a> for August 20\u201326. During the seven games he hit .433 (13-for-30) with three doubles, one triple, five home runs, nine RBI and seven runs scored. He had the highest slugging percentage (1.100) in the majors, the most total bases (33), was tied for first in hits and home runs, and tied for second in RBI.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>After the season, more defensive accolades followed Beltr\u00e9. He batted .478 (11-for-23) with four home runs, two doubles and five RBI in six games. He led the American League in home runs, slugging (1.087), OPS (1.607), total bases (25), and extra-base hits (six) while producing the fourth highest batting average. Beltr\u00e9 hit safely in all six games with two or more hits four times. He had the 24th multi-homer game of his career with a pair of home runs on July 4 against <a title=\"2013 Seattle Mariners season\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2013_Seattle_Mariners_season\">Seattle<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Maintaining his strong hitting throughout July, Beltr\u00e9 was named the American League Player of the Month, his fourth career monthly award. He batted .369 with four doubles, nine homers, 19 RBI and 13 runs scored over 26 games. He tied for the major league lead with both <a title=\"Alfonso Soriano\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alfonso_Soriano\">Alfonso Soriano<\/a>, in home runs, and <a title=\"Torii Hunter\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Torii_Hunter\">Torii Hunter<\/a>, in total bases (69). Beltr\u00e9 also finished among the AL leaders in slugging percentage (second, .670), hits (tied for second, 38), extra-base hits (tied for fourth, 13), RBI (tied for fifth) and batting average (sixth). He capped off the month with a walk-off home run to lead the Rangers past the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"2013 Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim season\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2013_Los_Angeles_Angels_of_Anaheim_season\">Angels<\/a> on July 31, the seventh walk-off home run of his career, and first with Texas. He led the American League with 199 hits and was fourth in batting average and fifth in total bases (321). He also made the top-10 in games played, slugging percentage and home runs. In the AL MVP voting, he was tied for seventh place. The Dallas-Fort Worth chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America named Beltr\u00e9 the Texas Rangers Player of the Year.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>On May 7, <a title=\"2014 Texas Rangers season\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2014_Texas_Rangers_season\">2014<\/a>, while facing <a title=\"Jorge de la Rosa\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jorge_de_la_Rosa\">Jorge de la Rosa<\/a> of the <a title=\"2014 Colorado Rockies season\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2014_Colorado_Rockies_season\">Colorado Rockies<\/a>, Beltr\u00e9 hit his 100th home run as a member of the Rangers, becoming only the fifth player in Major League history to hit 100 home runs with three different teams. He joined <a title=\"Darrell Evans\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Darrell_Evans\">Darrell Evans<\/a>, <a title=\"Reggie Jackson\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reggie_Jackson\">Reggie Jackson<\/a>, <a title=\"Alex Rodriguez\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alex_Rodriguez\">Alex Rodriguez<\/a>, and <a title=\"Jim Thome\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jim_Thome\">Jim Thome<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>On June 24, 2014, Beltr\u00e9 singled off <a title=\"Drew Smyly\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Drew_Smyly\">Drew Smyly<\/a> of the <a title=\"2014 Detroit Tigers season\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2014_Detroit_Tigers_season\">Detroit Tigers<\/a> for his 2,500th career hit, and the first hit of a 4-for-4 game.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>On September 18, Beltr\u00e9 singled off <a title=\"Sonny Gray\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sonny_Gray\">Sonny Gray<\/a> in the first inning for his 2,591st hit, surpassing <a title=\"Vladimir Guerrero\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vladimir_Guerrero\">Vladimir Guerrero<\/a> as the all-time hit leader among Dominican-born players.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><sup id=\"cite_ref-axisa091914_48-0\" class=\"reference\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-13013\" src=\"https:\/\/myboysay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Adrian-Beltre-222-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/myboysay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Adrian-Beltre-222-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/myboysay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Adrian-Beltre-222.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/sup>Beltr\u00e9 finished the 2014 season batting .324 \u2013 his highest average since 2004 \u2013 with 19 home runs and 77 RBI in 148 games.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In February <a title=\"2015 Texas Rangers season\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2015_Texas_Rangers_season\">2015<\/a>, the Rangers picked up Beltr\u00e9&#8217;s option, which would have become guaranteed if he had reached 586 plate appearances in the 2015 season.<sup id=\"cite_ref-50\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>While playing the <a title=\"2015 Cleveland Indians season\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2015_Cleveland_Indians_season\">Cleveland Indians<\/a> on May 15, 2015, Beltr\u00e9 hit his 400th home run on a sinker from <a title=\"Bruce Chen\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bruce_Chen\">Bruce Chen<\/a>. He became the 52nd player in MLB history to reach that plateau, and the fourth to do so while playing at least 75 percent of his games at third base.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><sup id=\"cite_ref-51\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>Enduring a torn ligament in his left thumb over the last three months of the season, Beltr\u00e9 had surgery to repair it immediately after the season ended.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>On August 3, 2015, Beltr\u00e9 hit for the cycle with hits in each of the first, second, third, and fifth innings against the <a title=\"2015 Houston Astros season\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2015_Houston_Astros_season\">Houston Astros<\/a> at Globe Life Park in Arlington in a 12\u20139 win. It was his third career cycle, second as a Ranger, and third at Globe Life, the Rangers&#8217; home park, making him the only player ever to hit three cycles in one stadium. He became the first Rangers player to hit for multiple cycles. The first player in 82 years to hit for a third cycle, he became the fourth player to do so and tied the major league record for total career cycles, joining <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Long John Reilly\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Long_John_Reilly\">Long John Reilly<\/a>, <a title=\"Bob Meusel\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bob_Meusel\">Bob Meusel<\/a> and <a title=\"Babe Herman\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Babe_Herman\">Babe Herman<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-ap080315_53-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The <a title=\"Phi Delta Theta\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Phi_Delta_Theta\">Phi Delta Theta<\/a> <a title=\"Fraternities and sororities\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fraternities_and_sororities\">fraternity<\/a> presented Beltr\u00e9 with the 2014 <a title=\"Lou Gehrig Memorial Award\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lou_Gehrig_Memorial_Award\">Lou Gehrig Memorial Award<\/a> on September 17, 2015, making him the first Rangers player to win the award. With this hit, Beltr\u00e9 became the 39th player in Major League history to reach the milestone.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><sup id=\"cite_ref-60\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>Beltr\u00e9 would once again show his signature home run knee drop after hitting a solo shot in the second inning in a game against the <a title=\"2016 Houston Astros season\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2016_Houston_Astros_season\">Houston Astros<\/a> on September 13, 2016. His 30th of the season, it was the first time he reached the mark since 2013 and fifth in his career.<span style=\"font-size: 13.3333px; line-height: 20px;\">\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0Ten days later, his two-run home run in the eighth inning against the Athletics aided the Rangers in clinching the <a title=\"American League West\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_League_West\">American League West<\/a> division crown for the second year in a row and the seventh in franchise history. Much to his disdain, the act has turned into a game, inducing repeat offenders such as Rangers teammate <a title=\"Elvis Andrus\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Elvis_Andrus\">Elvis Andrus.\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0Beltr\u00e9 also dislikes <a title=\"Gatorade shower\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gatorade_shower\">Gatorade showers<\/a>. After the Rangers signed Beltr\u00e9 to a five-year contract before the 2011 season, they sought to improve his skill by pairing him with Washington. He opined that Beltr\u00e9&#8217;s technique is wrong because he stops before catching and then throws in spite of relying very little on the positioning of his feet.
