Yet when his squad was announced ahead of the FIFA Confederations Cup 2017, it was criticised by many, despite ample evidence that the 57-year-old can mould a team and clearly enjoys the process of doing so. In the end, he lifted a trophy no other Germany manager has clinched before. While the team\u2019s central midfield has generally consisted of Mesut Ozil, Toni Kroos and Sami Khedira in the biggest matches of the past few years, the convincing performances delivered by 22-year-old Leon Goretzka and 27-year-old Sebastian Rudy will intensify competition for places in this area. \u201cWe have created alternatives,\u201d said Low. \u201cThat was one of the main aims of this tournament \u2013 to give young players experience in games and situations like these.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fjuliandraxler%2Fposts%2F1482986955098787%3A0&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"414\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>3) A leader for the next generation<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Julian Draxler became Germany\u2019s youngest captain back in May 2014, but in Russia he took on this role over several weeks at the age of just 23 \u2013 a big difference. \u201cHe has grown as skipper here,\u201d said his delighted coach. \u201cHe was a very, very good captain both on and off the pitch. He\u2019s still young and will have to keep developing in this role, but there\u2019s no doubt that he has a winner\u2019s mentality.\u201d While many were already aware of Draxler\u2019s ability to play in the centre of attacking midfield, his assured performances in this position for the national team \u2013 where he has generally been deployed on the wing until now \u2013 represent further progress.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>4) A tried-and-tested second system<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Joachim Low\u2019s previous system was based on dominance, aggressively pressuring,\u00a0<em>gegenpressing <\/em>and keeping a high line. Throughout the tournament in Russia he maintained a 3-4-2-1 formation that could be geared towards attack while simultaneously enabling the team to defend more deeply and patiently than Germany have been known for in recent years. Yet the Germany coach is the first to sound a note of caution. \u201cFor these young players, the work is only just beginning,\u201d he explained. \u201cThey have to strive for and play at a world-class level all the time. Although the foundations are certainly strong, winning the Confederations Cup and the U-21 European Championship offers no guarantees that we can become world champions again next year.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup was the 10th <a title=\"FIFA Confederations Cup\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/FIFA_Confederations_Cup\">FIFA Confederations Cup<\/a>, a quadrennial international men&#8217;s\u00a0<a title=\"Association football\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Association_football\">football<\/a> tournament organised by <a title=\"FIFA\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/FIFA\">FIFA<\/a>. It was held in Russia, from 17 June to 2 July 2017, as a prelude to the <a title=\"2018 FIFA World Cup\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2018_FIFA_World_Cup\">2018 FIFA World Cup<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Russia was announced as the hosts on 2 December 2010 after the country was awarded the <a title=\"2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cup bids\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2018_and_2022_FIFA_World_Cup_bids\">hosting rights of the 2018 FIFA World Cup<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-2\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> The matches were played in four different stadiums across four cities: <a title=\"Saint Petersburg\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saint_Petersburg\">Saint Petersburg<\/a>, <a title=\"Moscow\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Moscow\">Moscow<\/a>,<a title=\"Kazan\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kazan\">Kazan<\/a>, and <a title=\"Sochi\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sochi\">Sochi<\/a>. It was the first time Russia has hosted the tournament, and the third time the Confederations Cup has been held in the European continent. As hosts, <a title=\"Russia national football team\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Russia_national_football_team\">Russia<\/a> qualified automatically for the tournament; they were joined by the six winners of the <a title=\"Football continental championships\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Football_continental_championships\">FIFA confederation championships<\/a> and the <a title=\"2014 FIFA World Cup\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2014_FIFA_World_Cup\">2014 FIFA World Cup<\/a> champions, <a title=\"Germany national football team\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Germany_national_football_team\">Germany<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The final tournament was played in two stages: a group stage and a latter knockout stage. In the group stage, each team played three games in a group of four, with the winners and runners-up from each group advancing to the knockout stage. In the knockout stage, the four teams competed in <a title=\"Single-elimination tournament\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Single-elimination_tournament\">single-elimination<\/a> matches, beginning with the semi-finals and ending with the final match of the tournament. A third-place match was played between the two losing semi-finalist teams.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The defending champions, <a title=\"Brazil national football team\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brazil_national_football_team\">Brazil<\/a>, who won the previous three Confederation Cups (<a title=\"2005 FIFA Confederations Cup\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2005_FIFA_Confederations_Cup\">2005<\/a>, <a title=\"2009 FIFA Confederations Cup\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2009_FIFA_Confederations_Cup\">2009<\/a>, <a title=\"2013 FIFA Confederations Cup\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2013_FIFA_Confederations_Cup\">2013<\/a>), failed to qualify for the first time since <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"King Fahd Cup 1995\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/King_Fahd_Cup_1995\">1995<\/a> following their loss on penalties to <a title=\"Paraguay national football team\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paraguay_national_football_team\">Paraguay<\/a> in the quarter-finals of the <a title=\"2015 Copa Am\u00e9rica\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2015_Copa_Am%C3%A9rica\">2015 Copa Am\u00e9rica<\/a>.<a title=\"2015 AFC Asian Cup\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2015_AFC_Asian_Cup\">2015 AFC Asian Cup<\/a> winners <a title=\"Australia national soccer team\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Australia_national_soccer_team\">Australia<\/a> became the first team to qualify from multiple confederations, having previously represented the <a title=\"Oceania Football Confederation\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oceania_Football_Confederation\">OFC<\/a> in <a title=\"1997 FIFA Confederations Cup\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1997_FIFA_Confederations_Cup\">1997<\/a>, <a title=\"2001 FIFA Confederations Cup\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2001_FIFA_Confederations_Cup\">2001<\/a> and <a title=\"2005 FIFA Confederations Cup\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2005_FIFA_Confederations_Cup\">2005<\/a>.
