But it sounded like he wouldn\u2019t mind one last crack at an NBA title.<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cThe city of Jerusalem loves him and will welcome him back in open arms,\u2019\u2019 said Pick, the Israeli journalist. \u201cHe definitely sacrificed being the star of the team for the success of the team.\u2019\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n Amar’e Carsares Stoudemire (\/\u0259<\/span>\u02c8<\/span>m<\/span>\u0251\u02d0r<\/span>e\u026a<\/span> \u02c8<\/span>s<\/span>t<\/span>\u0252<\/span>d<\/span>\u0259<\/span>m<\/span>a\u026a\u0259r<\/span>\/<\/a><\/span><\/span>; born November 16, 1982)<\/sup> is an American professional basketball<\/a> player for Hapoel Jerusalem<\/a> of the Israeli Basketball Premier League<\/a> and the EuroCup<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n Stoudemire played high school basketball for five different schools, ultimately graduating from Cypress Creek High School<\/a> in Orlando, Florida<\/a> and declaring for the NBA draft<\/a> as a prep-to-pro<\/a> player. He won several prep honors, including being selected as Florida’s Mr. Basketball<\/a>. The Phoenix Suns<\/a> selected him with the ninth overall pick in the 2002 NBA draft<\/a>. He spent his first 12\u00bd seasons with the Suns and the New York Knicks<\/a>, before finishing his NBA career with the Dallas Mavericks<\/a> and the Miami Heat<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n His off-court ventures include a record label, a clothing line, acting and a series of children’s books for\u00a0Scholastic Press<\/a>. In addition, Stoudemire owns a significant share of the Hapoel Jerusalem Basketball Club<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n Stoudemire’s first name had previously been listed in the Phoenix Suns media guide as Amar\u00e9<\/i> or Amare<\/i>, but it was changed to Amar’e<\/i> in October 2008.<\/sup> Stoudemire told NBA.com that his name had always been spelled\u00a0Amar’e<\/i>, but the media had been spelling it incorrectly since he joined the NBA.<\/strong><\/p>\n Stoudemire did not start playing organized basketball until he was 14.\u00a0<\/sup> He only played two years of it in high school, but in both he was named the MVP of the Nike Summer League<\/a>. In his senior year he averaged 29.1 points, 15 rebounds, 6.1 blocked shots, and 2.1 steals per game.\u00a0<\/sup> Among Stoudemire’s high school honors was being selected to play in the 2002 McDonald’s All-American Game<\/a> at Madison Square Garden<\/a> in New York City, where he played with two future New York Knicks\u00a0<\/a>teammates, Carmelo Anthony<\/a> and Raymond Felton<\/a>. He was also named Florida’s Mr. Basketball<\/a>, the Orlando Sentinel<\/a>‘s<\/i> Florida High School Player of the Year, and to USA Today’s<\/i>‘s All-USA Basketball First Team.<\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n Considered a five-star recruit by Scout.com<\/a>, Stoudemire was listed as the No. 1 player in the nation in 2002.<\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n With his biggest goal in high school being making it to the NBA,<\/sup> Stoudemire committed to the University of Memphis<\/a>. However, he later de-committed and declared for the NBA draft, being taken with the ninth pick in the 2002 NBA draft<\/a> by the Phoenix Suns<\/a>. He was the only high school player taken that year in the first round.<\/strong><\/p>\n The following season<\/a>, Stoudemire improved statistically,<\/sup><\/sup> but his team stumbled to a 29\u201353 record, and point guard<\/a> Marbury was traded to the New York Knicks<\/a>. During the season Stoudemire had a 10-block game against the Utah Jazz<\/a>; he recorded six blocks in the first quarter alone (both team records as of 2012). During the summer of 2004, Stoudemire was selected to play for the eventual bronze medal-winning 2004 U.S. national team<\/a> in the Summer Olympics. However, head coach\u00a0Larry Brown<\/a> declined to give him significant playing time (6.875 MPG).<\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n During the 2004\u201305 NBA season<\/a>, Stoudemire\u00a0lead the Suns<\/a> to a 62\u201320 record. Averaging 26 points per game that year and achieving a new career high of 50 points against the Portland Trail Blazers<\/a> on January 2, 2005, he was selected to his first NBA All-Star Game<\/a> as a reserve forward. Stoudemire and Nash ran a pick-and-roll many\u00a0have compared to Hall of Famers John Stockton<\/a> and Karl Malone<\/a>. In the Western Conference Finals against the San Antonio Spurs<\/a>, Stoudemire averaged 37 points per game, but the Suns still lost in five games.<\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n On February 18, 2007, Stoudemire appeared in the <\/span>2007 NBA All-Star Game<\/a>, his second <\/span>all-star game<\/a> appearance. He scored 29 points and grabbed 9 rebounds, and came in second in MVP voting to <\/span>Kobe Bryant<\/a>.\u00a0He had previously announced that he would make the all-star game in his first season back after his knee recovered.<\/span><\/span>During the 2007 NBA Playoffs<\/a>, in a series against the San Antonio Spurs<\/a>, The Suns lost to the Spurs in six games despite Stoudemire averaging 25 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks throughout the series. He finished the regular season<\/a> averaging 20.4 points and 9.6 rebounds. He was selected to the All-NBA First Team<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n Stoudemire led the Suns in scoring (25.2 ppg) and rebounds (9.1 pg) in the 2007\u201308 season<\/a>. He made the all-star team<\/a> and was named 2nd Team All-NBA<\/a>. \u00a0The Suns however faltered in the playoffs, again losing to their rivals the San Antonio Spurs<\/a>. The Suns blew a big lead in game one of the series, and seemed to never recover, losing the series 4\u20131 to the Spurs. Stoudemire averaged 23 points in the series.<\/strong><\/p>\n In the 2009\u201310<\/a> season, Stoudemire was once again named to the all-star team. During the season, Paul Coro of The Arizona Republic<\/a><\/i> reported that the Suns<\/a> and\u00a0Cleveland Cavaliers<\/a> discussed a trade that would have sent Stoudemire to Cleveland to pair up with LeBron James<\/a>; the deal, however, never went through.\u00a0<\/sup>Stoudemire would eventually lead the Suns to a 54\u201328 record, clinching the third seed in the Western Conference. Stoudemire finished the season averaging 23 points and 9 rebounds on 56% shooting. The Suns would defeat the Portland Trail Blazers<\/a> 4\u20132 during the first round of the playoffs and beat the San Antonio Spurs 4\u20130 in the Conference Semifinals, to meet the defending champion Los Angeles Lakers<\/a> in the Conference Finals. After dropping the first two games, Stoudemire would score 42 points in game 3 and 21 in game 4, to help the Suns tie the series 2\u20132. The Suns failed to win any additional games in the series, dropping it 4\u20132.<\/strong><\/p>\n Stoudemire finished his tenure with the Suns fourth in franchise history in scoring average (21.4ppg), third in rebounds, free throws made and attempted, fifth in blocked shots, and single-game records of consecutive free throws in one game (20) and blocked shots (10).<\/strong><\/p>\n During the 2011 NBA lockout<\/a>, Stoudemire served as a player representative for the Knicks. Stoudemire represented the Knicks along with teammates Carmelo Anthony<\/a>, Chauncey Billups<\/a>, Toney Douglas<\/a>, and Roger Mason, Jr.<\/a>, who was Vice President of the Players Union. Stoudemire considered playing overseas for Maccabi Tel Aviv B.C.<\/a> due to his possible Jewish heritage, but instead opted to stay with the players union.<\/sup> In October 2011, Stoudemire appeared on ESPN First Take<\/a>, where he promoted his new sneaker line, the Nike<\/a> Air Max Sweep Thru.<\/sup><\/sup> During the lockout, Stoudemire trained and took history seminars at Florida International University<\/a>. He was also acting while on lockout, and appeared in the second to last episode of Entourage<\/a><\/i>.<\/strong><\/p>\n On February 18, 2015, Stoudemire signed with the Dallas Mavericks<\/a>.<\/sup> Four days later, he made his debut for the Mavericks against the Charlotte Hornets<\/a> and recorded 14 points in just 11 minutes off the bench.<\/sup> Stoudemire went on to play in 23 games for the Mavericks and averaged 10.8 points and 3.7 rebounds per game.<\/strong><\/p>\n On July 10, 2015, Stoudemire signed with the Miami Heat<\/a>.<\/sup> He played in just one of the Heat’s first 10 games of the 2015\u201316 season, largely due to knee soreness. He played eight minutes of first half action against the Sacramento Kings on November 19, scoring 10 points off the bench to spark the Heat early, as the team went on to win the game 116\u2013109.<\/sup> On January 31, 2016, he recorded season-highs of 13 points and 12 rebounds against the Atlanta Hawks<\/a>, starting in place of the injured Hassan Whiteside<\/a>.\u00a0<\/sup>Two days later, he set a new season-high with 14 points in a loss to the Houston Rockets, starting at center for the Heat in his sixth straight game.<\/strong><\/p>\n On July 26, 2016, Stoudemire signed a contract with the New York Knicks<\/a> in order to finish his career as a Knick, as he announced his retirement from the NBA later that day after 14 seasons in the league.<\/strong><\/p>\n Though he retired from the NBA, Stoudemire did not retire from playing basketball, and on August 1, 2016, he signed a two-year deal with Hapoel Jerusalem<\/a>, a team he co-owns in the Israeli Basketball Premier League<\/a>.<\/sup> On October 1, 2016, he helped Hapoel Jerusalem win the 2016<\/a> Israeli Basketball League Cup<\/a>.<\/sup> He went on to earn All-EuroCup Second Team<\/a> honors for the 2016\u201317 season<\/a>, as well as Israeli League<\/a> All-Star honors. In June 2017, he helped Hapoel Jerusalem win the 2016\u201317 Israeli League Championship.<\/strong><\/p>\n Stoudemire started the Each One, Teach One foundation in 2003. Stoudemire also funded his very own AAU<\/a> team, named Team STAT. Stoudemire played Wheel of Fortune<\/a><\/i> during its NBA week and donated all his winnings to the Boys and Girls Clubs<\/a> of the Greater Phoenix<\/a> area. In November 2008, Stoudemire received the NBA’s Community Assist Award, for his work with his Each 1, Teach 1 Foundation, and its efforts to provide safe drinking water in Sierra Leone<\/a> by funding the building of water wells in impoverished villages. Stoudemire visited the country in summer 2008, making visits to water well sites and meeting with President Ernest Bai Koroma<\/a> and the rest of the cabinet. In 2010 Stoudemire hosted the first Amar’e Stoudemire Basketball Academy in Mali<\/a>.<\/sup><\/sup> That same year, he posed shirtless on behalf of PETA<\/a>‘s Ink Not Mink campaign, protesting the wearing of animal fur<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n In a 2010 interview, Stoudemire said, “I have been aware since my youth that I am a Hebrew through my mother, and that is something that has played a subtle but important role in my development.” He visited Israel<\/a> that year, saying he intended “to get a better understanding of [his] heritage.”<\/sup><\/sup>Traveling with Stoudemire was Idan Ravin<\/a>, who works as a private coach for many NBA players who include LeBron James<\/a>, Kevin Durant<\/a> and Carmelo Anthony<\/a>.<\/sup><\/sup> During the trip, Ravin linked Stoudemire’s language skills to his ability to decipher defensive schemes on the court. Ravin also worked with Stoudemire on a daily basis during the trip.<\/sup><\/sup> Stoudemire was named an assistant coach of the Canadian basketball team for the 2013 Maccabiah Games<\/a>, giving him an opportunity to return to Israel.<\/sup> In July 2013, Stoudemire met with Israeli<\/a> president Shimon Peres<\/a>, who urged him to join the Israel national basketball team<\/a>.<\/sup> In a 2010 interview, Stoudemire was asked if there was a chance he was Jewish, Stoudemire said “I think through history, I think we all are”. However, he was not able to confirm if he had Jewish roots.<\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n In the early morning hours of February 6, 2012, Stoudemire’s older brother, Hazell, was killed in a car accident in Polk County, Florida<\/a>. He was not wearing a seat belt\u00a0<\/a>at the time of the crash.<\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n After guest appearances on Law & Order: SVU<\/a><\/i>, Entourage<\/a><\/i> and Sesame Street<\/a><\/i> in 2011, Amar’e appeared on TV Land’s The Exes<\/a><\/i> opposite Kristen Johnston<\/a> in a January episode. Stoudemire also appeared on Fox’s comedy series, The Mindy Project<\/a><\/i>, where Mindy Kaling<\/a>‘s character went on an outing with her co-workers to a nightclub, and wound up hanging in the VIP section with the New York big man. Stoudemire’s acting roles have not been limited to television. He had a role in the film\u00a0McGruber<\/a><\/i> and appeared in the blockbuster romance New Years Eve<\/a><\/i>.<\/sup> He also appeared as himself in the comedy film Trainwreck<\/a><\/i>, as one of the patients of sports surgeon Dr. Aaron Conners (played by Bill Hader<\/a>).<\/strong><\/p>\n In 2011, Stoudemire started his own clothing line which launched at Macy’s<\/a> in late 2011. It was designed with the help of Rachel Roy<\/a>. Stoudemire described the line as “courtside apparel for the fashion-forward female”.<\/sup> Stoudemire has his own record label named Hypocalypto and has signed rappers from Phoenix<\/a> to Atlanta<\/a>.<\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n In the summer of 2013, Stoudemire became a major shareholder of Hapoel Jerusalem B.C.<\/a> together with sports agent Arn Tellem<\/a> and Ori Allon.<\/sup><\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n Stoudemire is committed to turning kids, especially boys, into readers. \u201cI am excited to create my book series with Scholastic,\u201d said Amar\u2019e Stoudemire. \u201cThey are the best in the business, so I trust them with my stories. Listed at 6\u00a0feet 10\u00a0inches (208\u00a0cm) and 245 pounds (111\u00a0kg), the highly athletic Stoudemire suffered from chronic knee problems during his career, including undergoing microfracture surgery<\/a> on his knees. Stoudemire was selected to the Rookie squad in the Rookie Challenge. In the game, Stoudemire recorded 18 points, 7 rebounds and 4 steals. Stoudemire won the NBA’s Rookie of the Year award<\/a>, beating out Yao Ming\u00a0<\/a>and Caron Butler<\/a> and becoming the first player drafted out of high school to win the award. Stoudemire also was selected to the NBA All-Rookie First Team<\/a>. On June 30, 2010, Stoudemire opted out of his contract with the Phoenix Suns, which made him an unrestricted free agent. On July 5, 2010, Stoudemire and the New York Knicks<\/a> agreed in principle to a contract estimated to be worth around $99.7 million over five years.<\/sup> On the first day that free agents were allowed to officially sign, the Knicks formally introduced Stoudemire at Madison Square Garden<\/a>. There Stoudemire proclaimed “the Knicks are back!” referring to the team’s lack of success the past few years.<\/sup> With the Knicks, Stoudemire was reunited with head coach Mike D’Antoni, who had coached him with the Suns. On December 15, 2010, in a loss against the Boston Celtics<\/a>, Stoudemire set a franchise record with his ninth straight 30-point game.<\/sup> On December 17, 2010, Stoudemire set a franchise record with his ninth straight game shooting 50 percent or better from the field.<\/sup> On January 27, 2011, Stoudemire was named a starter on the Eastern Conference All-Star Team alongside LeBron James<\/a>, Dwyane Wade<\/a>, Derrick Rose<\/a>, and Dwight Howard<\/a>. He became the first Knick player to start in the game since\u00a0Patrick Ewing<\/a>. In the game Stoudemire scored 29 points, which tied him with LeBron James<\/a> for most on the Eastern Conference team. On February 22, 2011 the Knicks made a 3-team trade with the Denver Nuggets<\/a> and Minnesota Timberwolves<\/a> that sent Nuggets superstar Carmelo Anthony<\/a> to the Knicks along with the Nuggets’ starting point guard<\/a> Chauncey Billups<\/a>.<\/sup> In 2011, the Knicks made the playoffs for the first time since 2004. Stoudemire was injured during the playoffs. In game 3, Stoudemire attempted a Willis Reed<\/a>-like comeback by playing in the game despite a bad back.<\/sup> In the first round of the playoffs, the Knicks were swept by the Boston Celtics<\/a>.<\/sup> Stoudemire ended up having one of the best seasons in his career, averaging 25.3 points, 9.1 rebounds, 2 blocks and a career high 2.6 assists. Stoudemire developed a mid-range game and shot a career high 43% from three point range.
