It&#8217;s extremely true. I&#8217;m not one of these people where it&#8217;s just a matter of years passing. The 2003 US Open champion will be joined in the class of 2017 by four-time Grand Slam champion <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=376\">Kim Clijsters<\/a> and four-time Paralympian medalist in wheelchair tennis Monique Kalkman-van den Bosch.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Roddick, a former world No. 1, retired after the 2012 season after winning 32 career singles titles and $20 million in prize money. Perhaps his most memorable match, however, was a loss.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Roddick fell to Federer 16-14 in the fifth set of the dramatic 2009 Wimbledon final.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>It was the third time Roddick lost a Wimbledon final to the 17-time Grand Slam champion.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Andrew Stephen &#8220;Andy&#8221; Roddick (born August 30, 1982) is an American former professional <a title=\"Tennis\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tennis\">tennis<\/a> player.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>He became a <a title=\"Grand Slam (tennis)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grand_Slam_(tennis)\">Grand Slam<\/a> singles champion when he won the title at the <a title=\"2003 US Open (tennis)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2003_US_Open_(tennis)\">2003 US Open<\/a>, defeating <a title=\"Juan Carlos Ferrero\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Juan_Carlos_Ferrero\">Juan Carlos Ferrero<\/a> in the final. He is the most recent North American male player to win a Grand Slam singles event, the most recent to reach the top ranking, and the most recent to claim the year-end world No. 1 (2003). Roddick reached four other Grand Slam finals (<a title=\"The Championships, Wimbledon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Championships,_Wimbledon\">Wimbledon<\/a> in 2004, 2005, and 2009, and the <a title=\"US Open (tennis)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/US_Open_(tennis)\">US Open<\/a> in 2006), losing to <a title=\"Roger Federer\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roger_Federer\">Roger Federer<\/a> every time; the pair had a lopsided <a title=\"Federer\u2013Roddick rivalry\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Federer%E2%80%93Roddick_rivalry\">rivalry from 2001 to 2012<\/a>. Roddick was ranked in the top 10 for 9 consecutive years between 2002 and 2010, at year&#8217;s end, and won five <a title=\"ATP World Tour Masters 1000\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/ATP_World_Tour_Masters_1000\">Masters Series<\/a> in that period. He is married to <a title=\"Brooklyn Decker\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brooklyn_Decker\">Brooklyn Decker<\/a>, a former <i><a title=\"Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sports_Illustrated_Swimsuit_Issue\">Sports Illustrated<\/a><\/i> swimwear model and actress.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>On August 30, 2012, during the <a title=\"2012 US Open (tennis)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2012_US_Open_(tennis)\">2012 US Open<\/a> and on his 30th birthday, Roddick announced that he would retire after the tournament. This was his eighth season in World Team Tennis and the fifth team he has played for.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Roddick was born in <a title=\"Omaha, Nebraska\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Omaha,_Nebraska\">Omaha, Nebraska,<\/a> the son of Blanche (Corell), a <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"School teacher\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/School_teacher\">school teacher<\/a>, and Jerry Roddick, a businessman. Roddick has two older brothers, Lawrence and <a title=\"John Roddick\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Roddick\">John<\/a> (<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"All-American\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/All-American\">All-American<\/a> tennis player at <a title=\"University of Georgia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/University_of_Georgia\">University of Georgia<\/a> [1996\u201398] and head tennis coach at the <a title=\"University of Oklahoma\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/University_of_Oklahoma\">University of Oklahoma<\/a>), who were both promising tennis players at a young age.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Roddick lived in <a title=\"Austin, Texas\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Austin,_Texas\">Austin, Texas<\/a>, from age 4 until he was 11, and then moved to <a title=\"Boca Raton, Florida\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Boca_Raton,_Florida\">Boca Raton, Florida<\/a>, in the interest of his brother&#8217;s tennis career, \u00a0attending Boca Prep International School, and graduating in the Class of 2000. Roddick played varsity basketball in high school alongside his future Davis Cup teammate <a title=\"Mardy Fish\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mardy_Fish\">Mardy Fish<\/a>, who trained and lived with Roddick in 1999. During that time period, he intermittently trained with <a title=\"Venus Williams\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Venus_Williams\">Venus<\/a> and <a title=\"Serena Williams\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Serena_Williams\">Serena Williams<\/a>; he later moved back to Austin. His tennis idol growing up was <a title=\"Andre Agassi\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Andre_Agassi\">Andre Agassi<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Roddick considered quitting competitive tennis at the age of 17, when he had a losing streak in the juniors. His coach, <a title=\"Tarik Benhabiles\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tarik_Benhabiles\">Tarik Benhabiles<\/a>, talked him into giving tennis four more months of undivided attention. Roddick finished as the No. 6 junior in the U.S. in 1999, and as the No. 1 junior in the world in 2000. He won six world junior singles titles and seven world junior doubles titles, and won the <a title=\"US Open (tennis)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/US_Open_(tennis)\">US Open<\/a> and Australian Open junior singles titles in 2000.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In March in Miami, in the first round Roddick had his first ATP level victory as he beat World No. 41 <a title=\"Fernando Vicente\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fernando_Vicente\">Fernando Vicente<\/a> of Spain, 6\u20134, 6\u20130. In August in Washington, D.C., he beat World No. 30 <a title=\"Fabrice Santoro\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fabrice_Santoro\">Fabrice Santoro<\/a> of France, 4\u20136, 6\u20133, 6\u20133. Roddick played the <i>Banana Bowl<\/i> in the city of <a title=\"S\u00e3o Paulo\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/S%C3%A3o_Paulo\">S\u00e3o Paulo<\/a> and won, beating <a title=\"Joachim Johansson\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joachim_Johansson\">Joachim Johansson<\/a> in the final.<sup id=\"cite_ref-8\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Andy_Roddick#cite_note-8\">[8]<\/a><\/sup> Roddick also won the Australian Junior Open, defeating <a title=\"Mario An\u010di\u0107\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mario_An%C4%8Di%C4%87\">Mario An\u010di\u0107<\/a> in the final. In 2001, Roddick defeated former French Open champion <a title=\"Michael Chang\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Michael_Chang\">Michael Chang<\/a> in five sets in the second round of the tournament, despite the fact that clay was Roddick&#8217;s worst surface. During the following <a title=\"The Championships, Wimbledon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Championships,_Wimbledon\">Wimbledon<\/a>, he further showed potential by taking a set from eventual winner <a title=\"Goran Ivani\u0161evi\u0107\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Goran_Ivani%C5%A1evi%C4%87\">Goran Ivani\u0161evi\u0107<\/a>. At the age of 18, he also defeated 7-time Wimbledon champion, World No. 4, and fellow American <a title=\"Pete Sampras\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pete_Sampras\">Pete Sampras<\/a> at the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Miami Masters\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Miami_Masters\">Miami Masters<\/a> 7\u20136, 6\u20133, \u00a0and World No. 1 <a title=\"Gustavo Kuerten\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gustavo_Kuerten\">Gustavo Kuerten<\/a> of Brazil, 6\u20137, 6\u20134, 6\u20132, in August.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Roddick&#8217;s breakthrough year was 2003, in which he defeated <a title=\"Younes El Aynaoui\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Younes_El_Aynaoui\">Younes El Aynaoui<\/a> in the quarterfinals of the <a title=\"2003 Australian Open\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2003_Australian_Open\">2003 Australian Open<\/a>. Roddick and the Moroccan battled for five hours, with the fifth set (21\u201319 in favor of Roddick) at the time the longest fifth set in a Grand Slam tournament during the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Tennis open era\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tennis_open_era\">open era<\/a>, at 2 hours and 23 minutes. Despite a lackluster <a title=\"2003 French Open \u2013 Men's Singles\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2003_French_Open_%E2%80%93_Men%27s_Singles\">French Open<\/a>, Roddick enjoyed success in the United Kingdom by winning <a title=\"Queen's Club Championships\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Queen%27s_Club_Championships\">Queen&#8217;s Club<\/a>, beating World No. 2 <a title=\"Andre Agassi\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Andre_Agassi\">Andre Agassi<\/a>, 6\u20131, 6\u20137, 7\u20136, along the way, and reaching the Wimbledon semifinals, where he lost to eventual champion <a title=\"Roger Federer\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roger_Federer\">Roger Federer<\/a> in straight sets.
