If you’re in the Los Angeles area, you might want to start looking for tickets to that night’s game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, and if you’re elsewhere in the world, it might be time to look into travel accommodations:<\/strong><\/p>\n

As a tribute to the larger-than-life Laker great, whose career with the organization produced three NBA Championships, the Los Angeles Lakers, STAPLES Center, and AEG organizations commissioned the creation of a 1,200 pound, nine-foot bronze statue of the NBA Hall of Fame member. O\u2019Neal\u2019s statue will be connected to STAPLES Center, suspended 10 feet above the ground, at Star Plaza.<\/strong><\/p>\n

O\u2019Neal was a member of the Lakers from 1996-2004, leading the team to three consecutive NBA Championships from 2000-2002, winning the NBA Finals MVP award each time. A seven-time All-Star for the Purple & Gold, O\u2019Neal was also named the NBA\u2019s Most Valuable Player in 2000.<\/strong><\/p>\n

O’Neal joins Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Wayne Gretzky, Chick Hearn, Oscar De La Hoya, Magic Johnson and Jerry West as Los Angeles sports greats immortalized with statues outside of Staples Center.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Shaq’s statue, though, will be unlike any of the others outside of the arena. In fact, the 1200-pound, nine-foot version will tower over fans at the height of a regulation basket.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Shaquille Rashaun O’Neal (\/\u0283<\/span>\u0259<\/span>\u02c8<\/span>k<\/span>i\u02d0<\/span>l<\/span>\/<\/a><\/span><\/span> sh\u0259-KEEL<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span>; born March 6, 1972), nicknamed Shaq (\/\u0283<\/span>\u00e6<\/span>k<\/span>\/<\/a><\/span><\/span> SHAK<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span>), is a retired American professional basketball<\/a> player who is currently an analyst on the television program Inside the NBA<\/a><\/i>. Listed at 7\u00a0ft 1\u00a0in (2.16\u00a0m) tall[1]<\/a><\/sup> and weighing 325 pounds (147\u00a0kg), he was one of the heaviest players ever to play in the NBA. O’Neal played for six teams throughout his 19-year NBA career.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Following his career at Louisiana State University<\/a>, O’Neal was drafted by the Orlando Magic<\/a> with the first overall pick<\/a> in the 1992 NBA draft<\/a>. He quickly became one of the best centers<\/a> in the league, winning Rookie of the Year<\/a> in 1992\u201393<\/a> and later leading his team to the 1995 NBA Finals<\/a>. After four years with the Magic, O’Neal signed as a free agent<\/a> with the Los Angeles Lakers<\/a>. They won three consecutive championships<\/a> in 2000<\/a>, 2001<\/a>, and 2002<\/a>. Amid tension between O’Neal and Kobe Bryant<\/a>, O’Neal was traded to the Miami Heat<\/a> in 2004<\/a>, and his fourth NBA championship followed in 2006<\/a>. Midway through the 2007\u20132008 season he was traded to the Phoenix Suns<\/a>. After a season-and-a-half with the Suns, O’Neal was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers<\/a> in the 2009\u201310 season<\/a>. O’Neal played for the Boston Celtics<\/a> in the 2010\u201311 season before retiring.<\/strong><\/p>\n

O’Neal’s individual accolades include the 1999\u20132000 MVP award<\/a>, the 1992\u201393 NBA Rookie of the Year award<\/a>, 15 All-Star game<\/a> selections, three All-Star Game MVP awards, three Finals MVP<\/a> awards, two scoring titles<\/a>, 14 All-NBA team<\/a> selections, and three NBA All-Defensive Team<\/a> selections. He is one of only three players to win NBA MVP<\/a>, All-Star game MVP<\/a> and Finals MVP<\/a> awards in the same year (2000); the other players are Willis Reed<\/a> in 1970<\/a> and Michael Jordan<\/a> in 1996<\/a> and 1998<\/a>. He ranks 7th all-time in points scored<\/a>, 5th in field goals<\/a>, 13th in rebounds<\/a>, and 7th in blocks<\/a>. Largely due to his ability to dunk<\/a> the basketball, O’Neal also ranks 3rd all-time in field goal percentage (58.2%). O’Neal was elected into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame<\/a> in 2016.<\/strong><\/p>\n

O’Neal is also an active businessman and investor. He was an active bond investor in the early 1990s but continued to wade into stocks and made investments in various companies such as General Electric<\/a>, Apple<\/a>, and PepsiCo<\/a>. He described what has worked best for him in stock investing was where he felt a personal connection with the company.[215]<\/a><\/sup> He has also been an active real estate entrepreneur<\/a>. O’Neal was looking to expand his business ventures with real-estate development projects aimed at assisting Orlando<\/a> home owners facing foreclosure<\/a>. His plans involved buying the mortgages<\/a> of those who had fallen into foreclosure and then selling the homes back to them under more affordable terms. He would make a small profit in return, but wanted to make an investment in Orlando and help out homeowners.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In conjunction with Boraie Development<\/a>, O’Neal has developed projects in his hometown of Newark, New Jersey<\/a> including, CityPlex12 and One Riverview<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

O’Neal is on the advisory board<\/a> for Tout Industries<\/a>, a social<\/a> video service startup company<\/a> based in San Francisco. He received the position in return for breaking news of his NBA retirement on the service.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In September 2013, O’Neal became a minority owner of the Sacramento Kings.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In June 2015, O’Neal invested in technology startup Loyale3 Holdings Inc., a San Francisco brokerage firm whose website and mobile app enables companies to sell a piece of their IPOs<\/a> directly to small investors who put up as a little as $100 and also allows investors to regularly buy small amounts of shares in already public companies.<\/strong><\/p>\n

O’Neal is an investor for eSports<\/a> team NRG Esports<\/a>. He has also appeared in television commercials promoting the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive<\/a><\/i> league ELeague<\/a><\/i>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In late 2016 O’Neal purchased the Krispy Kreme<\/a> location at 295 Ponce de Leon Avenue<\/a> Atlanta<\/a>, GA. O’Neal is also the Global Spokesperson for the company.<\/strong><\/p>\n
