He played the <a title=\"Center (basketball)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Center_(basketball)\">center<\/a> and <a title=\"Power forward (basketball)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Power_forward_(basketball)\">power forward<\/a> positions.<span style=\"font-size: 13.3333px; line-height: 20px;\">\u00a0<\/span>Thurmond was a seven-time <a title=\"List of NBA All-Stars\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_NBA_All-Stars\">All-Star<\/a> and the first player in NBA history to record an official <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Quadruple-double\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Quadruple-double\">quadruple-double<\/a>. In 1965, he grabbed 42 rebounds in a game; only <a title=\"Wilt Chamberlain\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wilt_Chamberlain\">Wilt Chamberlain<\/a> and <a title=\"Bill Russell\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bill_Russell\">Bill Russell<\/a> recorded more rebounds in an NBA game. Thurmond was named both a member of the <a title=\"Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Naismith_Memorial_Basketball_Hall_of_Fame\">Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame<\/a> and one of the <a title=\"50 Greatest Players in NBA History\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/50_Greatest_Players_in_NBA_History\">50 Greatest Players in NBA History<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Known to fans as &#8220;Nate the Great&#8221;,\u00a0Thurmond has had his #42 jersey retired by both the <a title=\"Golden State Warriors\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Golden_State_Warriors\">Golden State Warriors<\/a> and <a title=\"Cleveland Cavaliers\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cleveland_Cavaliers\">Cleveland Cavaliers<\/a> franchises.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>He played in high school with another future <a title=\"National Basketball Association\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Basketball_Association\">NBA<\/a> star, <a title=\"Gus Johnson (basketball)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gus_Johnson_(basketball)\">Gus Johnson<\/a>, at Akron Central. Their powerful team went undefeated before losing to Middletown, led by <a title=\"Jerry Lucas\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jerry_Lucas\">Jerry Lucas<\/a>, in the Ohio state high school playoffs.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Passing up a scholarship offer to <a title=\"Ohio State University\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ohio_State_University\">Ohio State<\/a> to avoid becoming Lucas&#8217;s backup there, the 6&#8217;11&#8221; Thurmond chose <a title=\"Bowling Green State University\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bowling_Green_State_University\">Bowling Green<\/a>. He was named a first-team All-American by <i><a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"The Sporting News\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Sporting_News\">The Sporting News<\/a><\/i> in 1963, and was drafted by the <a title=\"Golden State Warriors\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Golden_State_Warriors\">San Francisco Warriors<\/a> later that year.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In 1963, he was drafted by the <a title=\"Golden State Warriors\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Golden_State_Warriors\">San Francisco Warriors<\/a> later that year. With the Warriors, Thurmond was an aggressive <a title=\"Rebound (basketball)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rebound_(basketball)\">rebounder<\/a>-defender who played at the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Forward (basketball)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Forward_(basketball)\">forward position<\/a> opposite superstar <a title=\"Wilt Chamberlain\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wilt_Chamberlain\">Wilt Chamberlain<\/a> or was his backup at <a title=\"Center (basketball)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Center_(basketball)\">center<\/a>. Despite playing on the same team as the dominant Chamberlain, Thurmond made an impact and was named to the <a title=\"NBA All-Rookie Team\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NBA_All-Rookie_Team\">NBA All-Rookie Team<\/a> in 1964.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>When Chamberlain was traded to the <a title=\"Philadelphia 76ers\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philadelphia_76ers\">Philadelphia 76ers<\/a>, Thurmond became the <a title=\"NBA All-Star Game\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NBA_All-Star_Game\">All-Star<\/a> starting center Chamberlain said he could be. Among his many accomplishments, Thurmond still holds the regular season record for rebounds in a quarter with 18. He averaged <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"List of National Basketball Association top individual rebounding season averages\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_National_Basketball_Association_top_individual_rebounding_season_averages\">21.3 and 22.0 rebounds per game<\/a> in the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"1966-67 NBA season\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1966-67_NBA_season\">1966\u201367<\/a> and<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"1967-68 NBA season\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1967-68_NBA_season\">1967\u201368<\/a> seasons \u2014 season averages exceeded by only <a title=\"Bill Russell\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bill_Russell\">Bill Russell<\/a> and Chamberlain in NBA history. Thurmond placed second to Chamberlain in the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"NBA MVP\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NBA_MVP\">MVP<\/a> balloting in the 1966\u201367 season, and averaged over 20 points per game each season from <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"1967-68 NBA season\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1967-68_NBA_season\">1967\u201368<\/a> through <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"1971-72 NBA season\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1971-72_NBA_season\">1971\u201372<\/a>, and played in seven NBA All-Star Games while with the Warriors. However, while star players like <a title=\"Rick Barry\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rick_Barry\">Rick Barry<\/a> and Jerry Lucas came and went, the Warriors were unable to win a championship with Thurmond at center, often failing to get past the star studded Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Division playoffs. Thurmond was an excellent passing center and was well known as the best <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Screen (basketball)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Screen_(basketball)\">screen setter<\/a> in the league for many years.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>He was traded to the <a title=\"Chicago Bulls\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chicago_Bulls\">Chicago Bulls<\/a> for <a title=\"Clifford Ray\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Clifford_Ray\">Clifford Ray<\/a> prior to the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"1974-75 NBA season\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1974-75_NBA_season\">1974\u201375 season<\/a>. On October 18, 1974 against the <a title=\"Atlanta Hawks\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Atlanta_Hawks\">Atlanta Hawks<\/a>, in his debut as a Bull, he recorded 22 <a title=\"Point (basketball)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Point_(basketball)\">points<\/a>, 14 rebounds, 13 <a title=\"Assist (basketball)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Assist_(basketball)\">assists<\/a> and 12 <a title=\"Block (basketball)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Block_(basketball)\">blocked shots<\/a>, becoming the first player in NBA history to officially record a <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Quadruple-double\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Quadruple-double\">quadruple-double<\/a> (blocked shots were not counted before <a title=\"1973\u201374 NBA season\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1973%E2%80%9374_NBA_season\">1973\u201374<\/a>).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>He was then traded to <a title=\"Cleveland Cavaliers\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cleveland_Cavaliers\">Cleveland Cavaliers<\/a> 13 games into the following season. In Cleveland, the now 35-year-old Thurmond came off the bench for the injured <a title=\"Jim Chones\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jim_Chones\">Jim Chones<\/a> to lead Cleveland to the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"NBA Eastern Conference Finals\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NBA_Eastern_Conference_Finals\">NBA Eastern Conference Finals<\/a> before the Cavaliers lost to the star-studded <a title=\"Boston Celtics\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Boston_Celtics\">Boston Celtics<\/a> in 1976.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>After retirement, Thurmond returned to <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"San Francisco, California\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/San_Francisco,_California\">San Francisco<\/a> and opened a restaurant, Big Nate&#8217;s BBQ, after a brief attempt at broadcasting.
