George Lemon III (April 25, 1932\u00a0\u2013 December 27, 2015), known professionally as “Meadowlark” Lemon, was an American<\/a> basketball<\/a> player, actor, and minister. For 22 years, Lemon was known as the “Clown Prince” of the touring Harlem Globetrotters<\/a> basketball team. \u00a0He played in more than 16,000 games for the Globetrotters and was a 2003 inductee of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame<\/a>. When basketball legend Wilt Chamberlain<\/a> was asked his opinion on the best player of all time, he responded, “Believe it or not, Meadowlark Lemon.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Meadowlark Lemon, Basketball Hall of Famer and the renowned \u201cClown Prince of Basketball\u201d, is a legendary hero in the world of sports\u2026 the man with the most recognizable face and name in sports history! His name and patented hook shot <\/a>are ingrained in the memories and hearts of generations who recognize him as the most popular member of the most beloved sports team in history \u2013 The Harlem Globetrotters.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Meadowlark Lemon helped change the face of American history, Black history, and Sports history!\u00a0 Meadowlark has played basketball before Kings, Queens, Presidents, Popes, and for millions of fans all over the World!\u00a0 Meadowlark has performed his on-court artistry in more than 100 countries around the Globe!\u00a0\u00a0 As an international star with the Harlem Globetrotters, Meadowlark was also known as an \u201cAmbassador of Good will in Short Pants.\u201d\u00a0 In 1997, at Ebony Magazine\u2019s 50th anniversary, Meadowlark was honored with the Sports Legends Award.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Meadowlark Lemon is a household name after playing in more than 16,000 career games for the Globetrotters that began in 1954 and lasted until 1979. \u00a0In 1993, Meadowlark went back with the Harlem Globetrotters for a 50 game \u201ccomeback\u201d season. \u00a0Meadowlark was voted as one of America\u2019s most recognizable faces following Alan Alda, John Wayne and Bob Hope.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Meadowlark says, \u201c \u2026An NBA player would need to play 160 games per year for 100 years to achieve my record of over 16,000 career games\u2026 as a Globetrotter we played over 350 games per year.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Meadowlark\u2019s rise to fame embodies the American dream. Can anyone top the storybook climb from the poverty of a small town right into the uniform of an international basketball team? A native of Wilmington, North Carolina, he practiced hoops as a child at the local playground. Meadowlark readily admits poverty or not, life was not boring.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Meadowlark was inducted into the NBA Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2003<\/em> and received the NBA Lifetime Achievement \u2013 John Bunn Award for Lifetime Achievement in the year 2000, which is considered the highest honor given by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame<\/a> outside of induction.\u00a0 Meadowlark was also enshrined as part of the Harlem Globetrotters Team in 2002 and the Team\u2019s John Bunn Award in 1999.\u00a0 Considering that basketball has been around for more than 100 years, it\u2019s astonishing there are less than 315 Hall of Famers and only 40 John Bunn Award recipients as of 2012.\u00a0\u00a0 Since 1959, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame has inducted only<\/em> 313 coaches, players, referees, contributors and teams. All of the basketball legends who have been Enshrined are celebrated for their outstanding achievements and accomplishments. As the highest honor in Professional Basketball, entrance into the Hall of Fame recognizes outstanding contributions to the sport.<\/strong><\/p>\n
