(above)<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"tab-gallery-nav\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"tab-gallery-nav\"><strong>Brazilian legend Pele was taken off intensive kidney treatment on Sunday (Nov 30) and his condition was improving, said the Sao Paulo hospital that is treating him. &#8220;Renal assistance was suspended (until Monday), when we will again evaluate the need for it,&#8221; read a statement from the Albert Einstein Hospital.<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"news_detail\">\n<div>\n<p><strong>The 74-year-old was described as &#8220;lucid&#8221; and &#8220;doing well&#8221;, but &#8220;still in intensive care&#8221;. Pele had been undergoing haemodialysis, a procedure that involves filtering a patient&#8217;s blood through an artificial kidney that cleans it before returning it to the body.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Certain local media had been reporting since Thursday night that &#8216;O Rei&#8217; (The King) was suffering from septicaemia after not responding to the antibiotics and described his condition as &#8220;delicate&#8221;.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Pele, whose real name is Edson Arantes do Nascimento, is widely regarded as the greatest player of all time. He was admitted to hospital on Monday, diagnosed with a urinary infection and given intravenous antibiotics.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>On Thursday, the hospital said he had been placed in intensive care after his condition became &#8220;clinically unstable,&#8221; causing widespread alarm. But Pele insisted on social media that he was fine and had simply been moved to another room for more privacy. &#8220;I want to take this opportunity to let you know that I am doing fine,&#8221; he said in posts to his Facebook and Twitter accounts.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;I am blessed to receive your love and support, and thank God this is nothing serious. &#8220;I was simply relocated to a special room within the hospital for privacy purposes only. While I appreciate all the visitors that came to see me, I really need to continue my treatment and recovery in peace.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Pele initially underwent surgery for kidney stones at the same hospital on Nov 13.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>ABOUT THE PERSON, PELE,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Edson Arantes do Nascimento, also known as Pel\u00e9, was born inside of\u00a0 October 1940, is a retired Brazilian professional <a title=\"Association football\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Association_football\">footballer<\/a> who is widely regarded to be the greatest player of all time. In 1999, he was voted <a title=\"FIFA Player of the Century\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/FIFA_Player_of_the_Century#Vote_specialists_.28IFFHS.29\">World Player of the Century<\/a> by the <a title=\"International Federation of Football History &amp; Statistics\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/International_Federation_of_Football_History_%26_Statistics\">International Federation of Football History &amp; Statistics<\/a> (IFFHS). The same year, <i><a title=\"France Football\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/France_Football\">France Football<\/a><\/i> asked their former <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Ballon d'Or\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ballon_d%27Or\">Ballon d&#8217;Or<\/a> winners to choose the Football Player of the Century; they selected Pel\u00e9.<sup>\u00a0<\/sup> In 1999, Pel\u00e9 was elected Athlete of the Century by the <a title=\"International Olympic Committee\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/International_Olympic_Committee\">IOC<\/a>, and <a title=\"Time (magazine)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Time_%28magazine%29\"><i>Time<\/i><\/a> named him in their list of <a title=\"Time 100: The Most Important People of the Century\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Time_100:_The_Most_Important_People_of_the_Century\">100 most influential people of the 20th century<\/a>. In 2013 he received the <a title=\"FIFA Ballon d'Or\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/FIFA_Ballon_d%27Or\">FIFA Ballon d&#8217;Or Prix d&#8217;Honneur<\/a> in recognition of his career and achievements as a global icon of football.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>According to the IFFHS, Pel\u00e9 is the most successful league goal scorer in the world, with 541 league goals.<sup>\u00a0 <\/sup>In total Pel\u00e9 scored 1281 goals in 1363 games, including unofficial friendlies and tour games, for which he was listed in the <i><a title=\"Guinness World Records\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Guinness_World_Records\">Guinness World Records<\/a><\/i> for most career goals scored in football.<sup>\u00a0<\/sup> During his playing days, Pel\u00e9 was for a period the best-paid athlete in the world.<sup>\u00a0<\/sup> In his native Brazil, he is hailed as a national hero, for his accomplishments in football, and for his vocal support of policies to improve the social conditions of the poor.<sup>\u00a0<\/sup> In 1961, Brazil President <a title=\"J\u00e2nio Quadros\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/J%C3%A2nio_Quadros\">J\u00e2nio Quadros<\/a> had Pel\u00e9 declared a national treasure.<sup>\u00a0<\/sup> During his career, he became known as &#8220;The Black Pearl&#8221; (<i>P\u00e9rola Negra<\/i>), &#8220;The King of Football&#8221; (<i>O Rei do Futebol<\/i>), &#8220;The King Pel\u00e9&#8221; (<i>O Rei Pel\u00e9<\/i>) or simply &#8220;The King&#8221; (<i>O Rei<\/i>).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Pel\u00e9 began playing for <a title=\"Santos FC\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Santos_FC\">Santos<\/a> at 15 and the <a title=\"Brazil national football team\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brazil_national_football_team\">Brazil national football team<\/a> at 16.
